The Volkswagen W12 Nardò, also simply known as the Volkswagen W12, is a concept supercar made by Volkswagen.
At the request of then Volkswagen Group CEO Ferdinand Piech, Giorgetto Giugiaro and his Italdesign team was tasked to design a Volkswagen sports car, with instructions that it had to be a W12-engined car with a mid-engine configuration and Volkswagen's Syncro AWD system.
Another reason for its conception was to prove to the world that the Volkswagen Group can build a supercar and a large and reliable engine for its luxury/sports cars, including the Phaeton and Touareg. In fact, the W12 engine featured in the eponymous Volkswagen W12 is closely related to the engines found in the Phaeton, Touareg, Audi A8, and Bentley Continental GT. The Bugatti Veyron's W16 engine was also descended from this W12.
In 2001, the Volkswagen Group released their most powerful sports car concept yet, in a bright orange paint: the W12 Nardò (referring to the Nardò Ring vehicle test track, near the Italian city of Nardò). The 5.6L naturally aspirated W12 produced 592 hp (441 kW) and 458 ft·lb (621 N·m), and the car weighed only 2646 lb (1200 kg). This enabled the Nardò to accelerate from a stop to 60 mph (97 km/h) in about 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 222 mph (357 km/h). The W12 Nardò was created by Charlie Adair.
The Volkswagen W12 was one of the 11 new cars introduced in the Winter Update.
Despite its redeeming all-round capabilities, the Volkswagen W12's acceleration, while not overly slow, is still not enough for Multiplayer races. The W12's top speed, at best, can only reach slightly higher than the McLaren MP4/8's. On the other hand, the W12 handles well due to being lightweight and has great nitro power, equivalent to the Lotus Exige S Coupe. The W12's poor acceleration and low total speed in its class mean that it is only a novelty item as it has no particular ability at which it can excel.
Due to the W12 requiring 36 W16 Engine cards for its Pro Kits, contrary to the fact that this car actually has a W12 engine, as well as its poor acceleration and total speed in its class, the W12 is an unfavorable choice for Events and Multiplayer, as cars like the McLaren P1™, Falcon F7, Lotus Evora Sport 410, and Lamborghini Estoque can overshadow the W12. The W12 is also part of only one collection: Winter is Gone. In other terms, the car's Season 9 event is suitable for grinding, as the car can beat the required time by more than 10 seconds, meaning this car's grinding capabilities are better than most people give it credit for. This is, unfortunately, not much of a saving grace; this car should really only be purchased for novelty.
The Volkswagen W12 costs 825,000 and 1,768,050 to max out, same as the Savage Rivale Roadyacht GTS. It was originally priced 825,000, but was later reduced to 575,000 in February 2015 before being reverted back to its original price of 825,000.
Prior to the Lunar New Year 2017 Update, the Volkswagen W12 had always been available for purchase after its pre-release cups were held during the December 2014 Winter Update. It was changed into a time-limited car, available only for purchase between February 26, 2017 and March 4, 2017.
As of April 7, 2017, the Volkswagen W12 is now permanently purchasable for everyone.
